Sullivan/Wellesley Intersection Improvements
The city completed reconstruction of the Sullivan Road/Wellesley Avenue intersection in summer 2022 in coordination with Spokane County’s Bigelow Gulch Phase 6 (Bigelow 6) project. The intersection is open, but Spokane County's project to reroute Bigelow Gulch/Progress Road into the improved intersection continues through September. When completed, traffic from E. Bigelow Gulch/N. Progress Road will flow directly into Sullivan Road.
The Bigelow 6 project and intersection upgrades are part of a long-term plan to reduce congestion and improve vehicle and pedestrian safety. Improvements to the intersection included:
- Installation of a new traffic signal at Sullivan and Wellesley
- Creation of wider vehicle lanes and center turning lanes
- Construction of a shared-use path from south of the intersection to Progress Road
- New sidewalk and ADA improvements
Construction on the Bigelow 6 project began April 4 and is scheduled to conclude in September (tentative). Construction on the Sullivan/Wellesley intersection began June 20 and concluded in mid-August.
Spokane Valley's intersection improvements at Sullivan and Wellesley cost $2.3 million, with $1.2 million in contributions from the city and the remainder from Spokane County.
Construction on the Bigelow 6 project is resulting in the closure of portions of E. Forker and Progress roads; resulting detours began in early April. See current map:
